The Cross Collection

Come along with me in learning how the Cross Collection was made. My burning desire was prompted during a 10 week course learning how to develop a signature line of jewelry. It is a program to help the artist find what fuels their creativity. The end result is having a grouping of art that is cohesive, a certain style that is unique to the maker. A style that is recognizable without the artist being present.
Most people recognize Van Gogh, Dale Chihuly, Andrew Wyeth and then there’s Tiffany jewelry. Whether it is a painting, glass, pottery or jewelry, they all have a certain style, you know it when you see their work.
This was what I was in search of, my individuality. I did not know how to achieve this.

We were given assignments to dig deep. It was the only way to get to the root of what drives our inspiration. We were challenged every single class. One question led to another and another. Why? Why? I found it to be exhausting at times but paid off in the end. During these exercises I decided to find out what I like about the cross. Whenever I see someone wearing one, I notice it.

Our teacher suggested I do some research about crosses. I had no idea there were so many different styles. I remembered buying a cross on the Ocean City, NJ boardwalk when I was 14. I was told it was a surfers cross. That seemed believable, after all, we were at the beach. That cross is the same as the Maltese Cross. The Maltese Cross was worn by  the Crusaders. It is symbolic for courage, honor, humility, honesty and protection. It is also the symbol of a fire fighter.

My first trip abroad was to Italy. Touring the churches, cathedrals, ancient ruins and the sacred spots, there were pillars & columns everywhere.

During another 10 week long course, I learned “line work” in design.
A vertical line symbolizes support, just like a column or pillar supports a structure.

As I began to gather information, I realized why I was drawn to the cross. It’s structure is supportive and I like that!!
I have learned the meaning of the cross is different for everyone. For some, it is a reflection of their religious beliefs, a spiritual connection or simply decorative as an accessory to their wardrobe. My hope is that the one they choose, speaks to them uniquely.

My crosses are symbolic pieces of art, each one is unique, no two are the same.
