    Inspiration for my Crosses

Ever since I was a child, I liked crosses. I guess, being raised a Catholic, had something to do with it. My first cross purchase was a surfer’s cross that I bought in a shop on Ocean City’s boardwalk. It was silver & shiny black. The black portion was probably enamel. Little did I know then that I’d actually be making enamel jewelry. When I started my jewelry journey, I always knew I would make crosses but didn’t have a clue what style or design. I knew it wouldn’t be ordinary or typical. During a 10 week course learning how to develop a signature line of jewelry, we were instructed…

    The Cross Collection

Come along with me in learning how the Cross Collection was made. My burning desire was prompted during a 10 week course learning how to develop a signature line of jewelry. It is a program to help the artist find what fuels their creativity. The end result is having a grouping of art that is cohesive, a certain style that is unique to the maker. A style that is recognizable without the artist being present. Most people recognize Van Gogh, Dale Chihuly, Andrew Wyeth and then there’s Tiffany jewelry. Whether it is a painting, glass, pottery or jewelry, they all have a certain style, you know it when you see…

    Cuttlebone Casting Technique

Cuttlebone Casting Technique… Who knew there were so many techniques to making jewelry? Do you? I didn’t, but found out quickly. One such technique is casting, what is it and why would one use it? The casting technique I’m describing here is Cuttlebone . Cuttlebone is a hard brittle structure found inside cuttlefish, made of calcium carbonate. If you have a parakeet or canary in your home, you’re likely to have cuttlebone inside their cage, it’s a calcium rich food for birds. Here’s the technique: You need 2 cuttlebones, both of them are sanded a bit to make a flat surface, because when sandwiched together there’s no  gap. Next, carve…

    Show and Tell…Once Upon a Time…

Once upon a time there was a little girl who would go with her Dad to the Bazaar of All Nations, headed straight for the Hobby Shop. There were little itty, bitty embellishments and kits galore. She was drawn to the glittery tubes of beads. Her eyes fell on a long tube of brightly colored beads, reminiscent of Native American Indian robes. She took that tube home and with needle and thread put enough beads on to wrap around her wrist. But that was as far as she got. Her creative mind had not yet matured…Many, many years have gone by since then. Allow me, if you will, to show…

    Journey Versus Destination

Have you ever asked yourself, what am I doing, where am I going? What’s life (my life) really all about? Me, too! I remember during a conversation with a friend, I forget what we were talking about, she made the comment “it’s not about the destination, but the journey”. Huh?? Got my wheels spinning! Yes, of course! And here I am embarking on another profession, jewelry art. Many thoughts have crossed my mind. What if I’m not good at it, what if nobody appreciates my effort, what if it doesn’t sell?? So much pressure. All I really need to do is, is to enjoy the moment, the process of…

    The Addition

No, I’m not talking about a home remodel, although, I wouldn’t mind making a few changes. This addition happens to be our new dog, Ignacio Lucca Avicolli! He is an Italian Greyhound. We got him when he was 8 weeks old, a puppy. What’s not to love about a cute, little, four legged animal? And you want to know something else? It’s ridiculous how much I love him!!   Look how big Ignacio is and what a good boy, too!

    Kathy’s Sense of Style!

I traveled to many destinations as a single woman. I could easily find a friend who was interested in an adventure. My first excursion was to Italy. I was a senior in high school. I remember being particularly drawn to the fine details of the architecture. Maybe that’s why I have an “eye” for detail in my work. Much of my work is influenced by my travels abroad. Texture and the various shapes found in ancient buildings and ruins drives my creativity. You might recognize this image at the top of the page, the Trevi Fountain,  a famous landmark in Rome. They say if you throw a coin over your…
