Creating this Charcoal Druzy Slice Necklace…

When I first started making jewelry I took a lot of classes. It was the only way I could learn, show me once and I got it. I wasn’t very good at first, because in order to master a technique, you have to do it over & over. I read somewhere, 1000 times, that’s a lot.
I took several classes of instruction with Fine Jeweler Ria Smith. She had a studio in the heart of Jeweler’s Row, right on Sansom Street.
I loved going there. It was the real deal. She had lots of tools and some serious jewelry equipment. I admit, I was intimidated…and as if that wasn’t enough, she had cases of fine jewelry. But she also had lots of gems and other goodies for her students to buy. Needless to say, I was in Heaven!

I remember Ria showing us some Druzy slices she bought also known as Geode. I have a geode from a vacation to Arizona, I was 19 at the time, who knew you could cut a geode into a slice??? I didn’t, let alone turn it into jewelry!!
When I learned that Ria was retiring and selling off her inventory, I was eager to see what she had. Lo and behold, there they were, the geode slices. I bought every one!
